Maximize Efficiency with the Right Home Office Furniture

Last Updated on March 15, 2024 by Treana Wunsch

If you work from home or are thinking about it, you may be wondering ‘what kind of furniture does a home office need?’

When it comes to home office furniture, there are a few key pieces that are essential. A simple desk that can be raised to a standing position is a must. Of course, you’ll need a sturdy chair that you don’t want to skimp on. Finally, you’ll need some basic storage furniture. This will give you a solid foundation.

In my previous post, I talk about what kind of space you need to set up a productive office. Read it here if you haven’t already.

Home Office Chair

First, and most importantly, every home office needs a comfortable chair that provides support for the back and shoulders. This will allow you to sit at your desk for long periods of time without feeling discomfort. You wouldn’t think a chair could be so complicated, however, when it comes to the home office chair you’ll be sitting at for several hours per day, you’ll want to go for quality. You don’t want to skimp here.

Should you get an office chair with wheels?

When it comes to purchasing a home office chair, you may be wondering…should I get an office chair with wheels?

A home office chair with wheels can make a big difference in your comfort and productivity. You can adjust your position easily. Whether you’re working at a desk, on the couch, or even in bed, being able to roll your chair closer or further away from your work surface can help you find the perfect position.

Having wheels is easier on your back and neck. wheels allow you to sit up straighter without putting strain on your back and neck. And if you do start to slouch, it’s easy to just roll back into place. Also, being able to move around without having to get up can save you time and frustration.

Is it better to have a desk chair with or without arms?

Next, you may wonder if your home office chair should have armrests.

For decades, I believed an office chair should NOT have armrests, however, evidence is now suggesting that armrests can help support your posture while being seated for long periods of time. You can read more about it here. When shopping for your home office chair, adjustable armrests are a must. However, armrests that are positioned incorrectly for you are worse than no armrests at all.

Your home office chair should be adjustable

Your home office chair should be adjustable for a number of reasons.

First, you want to be able to adjust the height of the chair so that your feet are flat on the floor and your thighs are parallel to the floor. This will help you maintain good posture and avoid any back or neck pain. Second, you want to be able to adjust the backrest so that it provides support for your lower back. Third, you want to be able to adjust the armrests so that they are low enough for you to reach and tall enough so that your elbows can rest naturally at your sides.

Fourth, you want to be able to swivel the chair so that you can reach different parts of your desk without having to get up. Lastly, you want to be able to roll the chair around so that you can easily move from one side of the room to the other.

What fabric is best for office chairs?

You may not think about it when you’re sitting in your home office chair, but the fabric that your chair is made from can make a big difference in your comfort level. If you’re going to be spending a lot of time in your home office, you want to make sure that you have a comfortable chair that you can sit in for long periods of time without getting sore.

There are a few different factors to consider when choosing the right fabric for your home office chair. First, think about the climate in your home office. If it’s a warm room, you’ll want to avoid fabrics that will make you sweat, like wool or leather. Instead, opt for a breathable fabric like cotton or linen. If you’re in a chilly office, then by all means pull out the wool or leather.

Second, think about the type of work you do while sitting in your home office chair. If you work with lots of printed documents, then a fabric that s easy to clean and maintain is a must. On the other hand, if you spend all day typing on your computer, then you want to consider a fabric with some texture to it like wool. That way, you can lean back in your office chair and have a comfortable typing experience.

Finally, think about the colour of the home office chairs. If the colour of the chair is too distracting, it could negatively affect your mood and productivity. That’s why black and grey are usually recommended as the top colours for office chairs.

Home Office Chair Recommendations

I really like the LÅNGFJÄLL Conference chair with armrests from Ikea. It’s a minimalistic chair that looks great. This chair is for you if you prefer to keep things simple and have an eye for design.

If you want something very comfortable or you have back issues, you may want to consider this chair. It has a mesh back for good airflow and is adjustable.

The Office Star Pro-Line II Big and Tall Mesh Back Executive Chair with Mesh Seat and Titanium Base is a great option if your budget is larger and comfort is your top priority.

How much should you spend on a home office chair?

It’s important to consider your budget when deciding on an office chair, as well as the type of work you will be doing from your home office. If you plan to spend long hours in your chair, then investing in one with good ergonomics is key. Look for adjustable features such as lumbar support, armrests and tilt tension so you can find a comfortable position for typing or reclining. High-end models might also come with additional features like headrests or massage capabilities. However, these chairs often come with high price tags too!

The largest part of your home office budget should go toward your office chair. It’s the piece of office furniture that will get the most use. The only other piece of furniture in your house that will get more use is your bed. It also dictates how comfortable you will be when working.

That being said, the bare minimum you should spend on an office chair is $200. If you can afford to spend more, spend more.

Home Office Desk

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of what type of desk is best for a home office. The best desk for your home office depends on the specific needs of your work and your personal preferences. However, there are a few general tips that can help you choose the best desk for your home office.

First, consider the amount of space you have available for your desk. If you have a small home office, you might want to consider a compact desk or a corner desk. If you have a large home office, you can afford to be more selective in your choice of desk.

What shape should your office desk be?

When creating a home office, one of the most important pieces of furniture to consider is the desk. The shape and size of your office desk can have a huge impact on how efficiently you work.

The most popular choice for an office desk is rectangular or square, but there are additional shapes that you should consider as well. An L-shaped desk allows for more surface area by providing extra space to spread out documents and supplies while keeping everything organized. A corner desk helps maximize the space in tight areas, such as those in lofts or apartments. If you prefer something more unique, a round or U-shaped desk adds creative flair to your home office setup.

No matter which shape best fits your needs, make sure your office has enough surface area and storage space so that you can stay productive when working from home.

Should your home office desk have built-in storage?

When it comes to setting up a home office, there are some key pieces of furniture that you will need. One of the most important is the desk. And one of the questions that often arise when deciding on a desk for your home office is whether or not it should have built-in storage.

On one hand, having built-in storage can be beneficial as it can help keep papers and other items organized, making them easier to find when needed. It also helps reduce clutter in your workspace and makes it look more aesthetically pleasing. On the other hand, having too much built-in storage can make your work area feel cramped and uncomfortable to work in and could limit your options if you need additional space down the line.

I like to keep everything simple in my space so I wouldn’t purchase a desk with storage space or one that’s L-shaped. A simple rectangular desk is all you need and it will force you to keep things neat and clean. It’s also easier to place properly in most spaces. I’ll be writing an article placement next. So watch out for that.

What type of surface should your home office desk have?

The type of surface on your desk will affect the look and feel of your workspace, so it’s important to choose wisely. A wooden desk, for example, has a classic look and can be paired with almost any decor style. Glass desks offer an open and light feeling that also looks sleek, but may not be suitable for those who are prone to spilling coffee or tea on their work surfaces. Laminate desks are available in a variety of colours and styles that provide durability at an affordable price point. Finally, metal desks have a modern feel while providing excellent stability for writing or laptop use.

No matter which type you choose, make sure you select the right size and shape to suit your space needs; in addition to considering its aesthetic value.

What colour should your home office desk be?

When creating a home office, one of the most important decisions to make is what colour desk should you choose. Do you want a light or dark wooden desk that blends in with the rest of your decor? Or do you prefer something bolder like a bright green or blue hue?

Colour plays an essential role in setting the overall tone and feel of any room. In a home office, having the right furniture is key to productivity and concentration. It’s important that your chosen colours help create an atmosphere conducive to work. This means going for something neutral yet stimulating enough to keep you focused on work tasks. A warm beige or navy blue are both great options as they help promote relaxation while still providing plenty of energy throughout your workday.

My desk is white and I find it helps keep my energy up since it lightens up the room.

Should my home office desk be adjustable?

There are several advantages to having an adjustable home office desk compared to a standard desk.

For starters, adjustable desks allow for greater flexibility in terms of ergonomics. You can adjust the height and tilt of the desktop according to your needs, which helps reduce strain on your neck, back and arms while working at the computer or writing. An adjustable desk also allows you to switch from sitting to standing throughout the day, which can reduce fatigue and boost productivity. With an adjustable desk, it’s easy to move between tasks with minimal effort; simply raise or lower your workspace as needed.

How much should you spend on a home office desk?

When setting up a home office, one of the most important pieces of furniture to consider is a desk. A comfortable and ergonomic desk will be essential in helping you stay productive while working from home, but how much should you spend on it?

The good news is that you don’t have to break the bank when purchasing a home office desk. There are many affordable options available that offer both quality and style, such as foldable desks or adjustable desks with built-in storage. Depending on your budget, there are plenty of choices available so make sure to shop around before making any major purchases.

If you can afford to splurge on a higher-quality piece of furniture for your workspace, then do it! Investing in an ergonomic design with lots of storage space can help promote better posture and prevent future back pain.

I always recommend getting a sit/stand desk. Sitting all day is extremely unhealthy so the more standing you can do the better. I have this one from Ikea but it has a manual crank to move the desk up and down and I find I don’t move it as often as I should because of this.

If I were to purchase a new sit/stand desk I’d go with this one. It has an electric lift system with height memory options. Plus there are 3 colour options.

Home Office Storage

Home Office Storage is an essential component of any home office. No matter how small or large the space, having adequate storage is key to creating an efficient workspace. With proper storage solutions, you can easily keep your documents, supplies, and equipment organized and accessible.

When it comes to furnishing a home office, there are so many options available that it can be hard to choose which pieces to start with. However, one piece of furniture that should always be included in any home office setup is a storage cabinet or armoire. This type of furniture provides plenty of space for books and binders as well as other items that need to stay organized such as electronics and stationery supplies. It’s best to opt for a style with adjustable shelves so the pieces can be moved around as needed when rearranging the layout of your workspace.

What size should my home office storage be?

When creating a home office, it can be difficult to know what type and size of storage you need. It is important that you have the right furniture items in place to make your workspace efficient and pleasant.

The first step when choosing storage for your home office is to determine how much space you’re working with. If possible, measure out the room so that when shopping for furniture, you know exactly what fits most comfortably in the room without overcrowding it or taking away from its purpose as an office space. Once this is established, then figure out what kind of storage pieces would work best for your needs – whether that be shelves, drawers, cabinets or filing systems.

In my home office, I have a low cabinet that houses my office and printer supplies. It also acts as a surface to place my printer and shredder. I also have a large vintage filing cabinet for client files. The more storage you have, the more clutter gets accumulated. Keep it to a minimum.

Should your home office storage have a lock?

Decorating and furniture for a home office can be difficult to decide on due to the number of options available. In addition to deciding the necessary items like a desk, chair, and bookshelf, there is one more aspect that should not be overlooked: storage with a lock.

Having secure storage in your home office is important because it allows you to keep documents and electronics safe from theft or damage. Further, having a lockable storage system provides an extra level of security for work-related materials as well as personal items. A locked cabinet or filing cabinet can also help protect sensitive information such as passwords and bank accounts from being accessed by anyone but yourself. Additionally, if you have children who may wander into your workspace, locking potentially hazardous materials away will help ensure their safety.

A simple storage cabinet is great to have to store files and office supplies. A small home office most likely won’t have a need for more than that. I bought a large vintage filing cabinet because I thought it was cool but it was definitely more than I needed. Especially, now that paper documents are becoming less prevalent. That's All Folks...

Having a properly equipped home office is essential for staying organized and productive. It’s important to consider the type of work you do and how much space you have when choosing your furniture. A comfortable chair, a sturdy desk and adequate storage are all must-haves for a successful home office setup.

Don’t get carried away buying fancy furniture. Simple is best and you can always upgrade later when your business is operating successfully.

Treana did all the legwork for the business plan I was putting together. I started going through the process myself, but figured after about 5 headaches in that it would probably be better to hire someone who knew the ins and outs of putting one together. Glad I did!
